Lago Di Como

(Lake Como)

July 17, 2007 - July 20, 2007

We took the water taxi in Venice to the train station, where we caught a train to the first stop outside of Venice (Mestre) where we rented a car. We drove across Northern Italy (through Verona) to Lake Como. Our hotel was Hotel Villa Marie in Tremezzo, Italy. Lake Como has been a resort area for the last 2,000 years. Julius Caesar sent 5,000 colonists to Como in 49 B.C.

This is the town of Varenna. It is a stop on the slow water taxis. We ate lunch there and wandered around town a bit.
Villa Del Balbianello. This is a view taken from our hotel window. Scenes from Star Wars and the James Bond movie, Casino Royale were filmed there.
Another shot of Villa Del Balbianello from our window. Photoshop enhanced vignette.
This is a clock/bell tower as seen from the roof of our hotel in Tremezzo. The church is called La Cheisa Parrocchiale Di San Lorenzo, built in 1775.
Pam at a public park, about 200 yards from our hotel.
This is the flagpole at our hotel. In the U.S., we fly the U.S. flag above the state flag, showing it's relative importance. Here, they are flying the Italian flag above the European Union flag. I am not sure if this is a statement or not.
None of the sailboats were under sail because there was little wind. Italy was having a real heat wave and the temperatures were around 95ºF during the day. It was about the same as Houston weather, but I would have enjoyed it a little cooler.
We were on the roof of our hotel.
This is the veranda of our hotel. Andreas, the owner, has quite a green thumb.
Our hotel room. Notice the view. There was no air conditioning, but it got cool enough at night that we didn't need it.

The best smile I could muster at the moment
A continental breakfast was served every morning from 8 to 10. This is a view from our balcony
Pam at breakfast. We had rolls, fruit, juice, cereal, cheese and ham slices.
We ate dinner one night at a very nice restaurant near our hotel, La Darsena Restaurante. I had their beef dinner
Pam had chicken kabobs with pesto risotto

However, the BEST meals were the ones like these - eating sanwiches and drinking wine out of the bottle at a public park

We made it a point to look up our friends' parents in Colico. Annie and Domizio De Poi can speak little English, and we can speak little Italian, but we had a great time meeting and visiting with them
The proprietors of Hotel Villa Marie, Andreas, Elizabetta, and their children. They do a great job of running their hotel
Another picture of Villa Balbianello from the water boat on our return trip from Como. Can you tell I like the place?
We watched this torture session unfold while we were eating lunch at an outside cafe in Como. It seems this was a right of passage for a poor guy getting his doctorate or M.D. They wrapped him in saran wrap and poured everything on him - eggs, champaigne, powdered detergent, etc. Pam (the nurse) was watching to see if he got too hot - whereas she would have stopped the festivities.

Colico, Italy.
